The 'Game' Approach

For children aged 3-10, turn the photo session into a game. Explain that they are an 'astronaut' or a 'spy' and need to keep a very serious face for their secret mission. This often yields better results than simply telling them to 'stop smiling'.

Avoid the 'Cheese' Reflex

Children are trained to say 'Cheese' and smile broadly the moment they see a camera. You need to untrain this for 10 seconds. Use terms like 'relax your face' or 'look at the little bird on top of the phone'.

Clothing and Hair

Ensure their hair isn't messy and isn't covering their eyes. Avoid 'novelty' shirts with large cartoon characters or busy patterns, as these can be distracting in the Final crop. A simple solid-colored polo or t-shirt works best.
