The Severity of the Open Mouth

A slightly parted mouth or a relaxed, open jaw is almost universally accepted for children under 5. However, if the child is aggressively screaming, crying, or laughing hysterically (showing full rows of teeth and distorting their cheekbones), the photo will be rejected because the biometric geometry of the face is too warped.

Distraction Techniques

To achieve a relaxed mouth, avoid making the child laugh. Instead, use a distraction technique: hold a silent, brightly colored toy slightly above the camera lens to capture their solemn, focused attention for the 2 seconds required to snap the photo.
